Often times, designers will recommend a transitional chandelier because it is a marriage of traditional styles and contemporary styles.
It is helpful to know the 3 different styles in today’s decorating world. I would like to discuss all 3 styles in some detail and the circle back to the attributes of a traditional chandelier. By gaining a better understanding of the different styles, it will enable you to really hone in on what is meant by transitional.
The three types of styles
Transitional is defined by clean lines but not too edgy. Transitional is often a marriage between traditional and contemporary. Transitional lends itself to individual interpretation which in itself is a very individualistic style. Transitional style is sometimes known as classic with a contemporary twist. Of course this site has many Transitional Chandeliers that you can choose from.
Contemporary is defined as fundamental, simplicity, clean lines and texture. Contemporary doesn’t always mean that your house will look cold and minimalist. In fact, contemporary homes can be very warm and welcoming when designed correctly. The single most element in contemporary design is defined by the lines of the products. Straight clean lines with the appropriate color choices are important in contemporary styled homes. Kichler outdoor ceiling fixtures have many contemporary families for which to choose from.
Traditional is defined by a comfortable look. It is often characterized as classic and also casual. At the same time, traditional style can be elaborate, splendid, elegant and luxurious. Kichler outdoor ceiling fixtures have many traditional families for which to choose from.
Now that you have a basic understanding of all three styles, you can probably see why Transitional Chandeliers are so popular today. The style allows you to be fun, bold, casual and even a little wild if you wish.
Considerations when selecting a transitional chandelier
The first consideration in chandelier selection should be the size of the chandelier itself. Transitional Chandeliers come in many different sizes, including width, height and number of lights on the chandelier itself. As a general rule, the chandelier should be about 30 inches off the table in height. If the room is smaller than 10 by 10, then a diameter should be no more than 17 to 20 inches. A 12 x 12 room, then a 26 or 27 inch diameter would look about right. A 14 by 14 room choose a 28 to 36 inch diameter transitional chandelier. Total wattage of the bulbs, depending on chandelier size, should be approximately 200-400.
Another consideration should be fixture height. For smaller ceiling rooms, (8-9 feet), then a single tier chandelier is sufficient. For ceiling heights greater than 9 feet but less than 12 feet, then consider a 2 tier chandelier. Great than 12 feet, a 3 tier chandelier should be used, provided your room is larger than 14 by 14.
Whatever size you decide to choose, Transitional Chandeliers are a fun, exciting and way to make you house look great. Kichler offers a many different types of Transitional Chandeliers in all sizes and price points.
